Vitamin E acts as an antioxidant in the body, protecting polyunsaturated fatty acids (components of cellular membranes) and other oxygen-sensitive substances such as Vitamin A and Vitamin C from oxidative damage.
In premature neonates, Vitamin E deficiency may cause irritability, edema, thrombosis, and hemolytic anemia. In older children and adults with low serum tocopherol concentrations, deficiency has been associated with creatinuria, ceroid deposition, muscle weakness, decreased erythrocyte survival, and increased in vitro hemolysis by oxidizing agents.
Diarrhoea and abdominal pain may occur with doses greater than 1000 IU daily.
Vitamin E may increase bleeding tendency, particularly in patients with Vitamin K deficiency or those receiving anticoagulant therapy. Prothrombin time and INR should be monitored in such patients.
Use with caution in patients at risk of thrombosis. Caution is also advised when used concurrently with oral estrogens.
Pregnancy: There is no evidence of safety with high doses of Vitamin E during pregnancy. It should not be used in pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, unless clearly indicated.
Lactation: Use during breastfeeding is not recommended, as excretion into breast milk has not been established.
Doses exceeding 1000 IU daily may cause transient gastrointestinal disturbances, including diarrhoea and abdominal pain. Management is supportive.
Vitamin E potentiates the effect of warfarin and other anticoagulant medications, enhancing their anticoagulant activity and increasing the risk of bleeding. It may also impair the absorption of other fat-soluble vitamins when taken concurrently.
Store in a dry place, away from light and heat. Keep out of the reach of children.
