Adhatoda vasica (Basok) is the principal active herb. It contains alkaloids — principally vasicine and vasicinone — that relieve cough and bronchial spasm and help liquefy mucus in the respiratory passages. Vasicine has demonstrated bronchodilating activity both in vitro and in vivo, and both alkaloids show anti-allergic and anti-asthmatic properties.
The other botanical ingredients in the formula contribute complementary actions: Glycyrrhiza glabra provides anti-inflammatory and demulcent (soothing) effects; Piper longum and Piper nigrum are bacteriostatic and anti-inflammatory; Terminalia chebula supports immune function; and the remaining aromatics contribute antimicrobial and soothing properties. Together the formula acts as an expectorant, mucolytic, anti-inflammatory, and throat-soothing preparation.
The syrup is non-sedating, non-alcoholic, and non-constipating.
