A-Cof

A-Cof temporarily relieves the following symptoms caused by the common cold, hay fever (allergic rhinitis), or other upper respiratory allergies:

• Non-productive cough due to minor throat or bronchial irritation
• Runny nose
• Sneezing
• Itching of the nose or throat
• Itchy and watery eyes
• Nasal congestion

Adults and Children over 12 years

1 teaspoonful (5 ml), four times a day at 4-hour intervals.

Children (6–12 years)

½ teaspoonful, four times a day at 4-hour intervals.

Children under 6 years

A-Cof combines three active agents: an antitussive, a decongestant, and an antihistamine.

Dextromethorphan is a safe, non-narcotic cough suppressant that acts centrally on the cough centre in the medulla. Although structurally related to morphine, it has no analgesic or habit-forming properties and generally causes little sedation.

Phenylephrine is a decongestant that works by shrinking blood vessels in the nasal passages, reducing swelling in the nose and ears. This makes breathing easier and relieves discomfort caused by the common cold, flu, allergies, sinusitis, and bronchitis.

Triprolidine is an antihistamine that relieves allergy symptoms such as rash, watery eyes, itchy eyes, nose, throat or skin, cough, runny nose, and sneezing. It is a potent competitive histamine H1-receptor antagonist of the pyrrolidine class with mild central nervous system depressant properties that may cause drowsiness. By also blocking acetylcholine, it helps dry up body fluids, relieving watery eyes and runny nose.

Common: Drowsiness, constipation, and gastrointestinal discomfort.

No evidence of physical dependence of the morphine type has been observed.

A-Cof should not be used in patients with liver disease or asthma. It is also contraindicated in patients currently taking monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, or within 2 weeks of stopping such treatment.

A-Cof may cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery if affected. Avoid alcohol while taking this medication.

Use with caution in patients with any of the following conditions

• Epilepsy
• Prostatic hypertrophy
• Glaucoma
• Hepatic (liver) disease
• Hypertension
• Heart disease
• Diabetes
• Hyperthyroidism

If symptoms do not improve within one week, or if they are accompanied by a high fever, consult a physician before continuing use.

In case of overdose, hospital admission is strongly advised. Overdose may result in the following effects:

• Respiratory depression
• Paranoid psychosis
• Delusions
• Hallucinations
• Convulsions

Do not take A-Cof with MAO inhibitors, as this combination may cause a serious or potentially fatal drug interaction. The following MAO inhibitors must be avoided during treatment and for at least two weeks before starting treatment:

• Isocarboxazid
• Methylene blue
• Moclobemide
• Phenelzine
• Procarbazine
• Rasagiline
• Selegiline
• Tranylcypromine
