5X is indicated for emergency contraception within 120 hours (5 days) of unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure.

A history of ectopic pregnancy is not a contraindication to the use of 5X; however, clinicians should be aware of this risk.

Repeated Use

5X is intended for occasional emergency use only and should not replace a regular method of contraception. Repeated use within the same menstrual cycle is not recommended, as safety and efficacy in this situation have not been evaluated.

Fertility Following Use

Fertility is likely to return quickly after taking 5X. To prevent pregnancy from a subsequent episode of unprotected intercourse, a barrier method (e.g. condom) should be used.

Effect on Menstrual Cycle

After taking 5X, menstruation may occur a few days earlier or later than expected. In clinical trials, cycle length increased by a mean of 2.5 days but returned to normal in the subsequent cycle. 7% of subjects experienced menstruation more than 7 days earlier than expected, and 19% experienced a delay of more than 7 days. If the expected period is delayed by more than 1 week, a pregnancy test should be performed. Additionally, 9% of women reported intermenstrual bleeding after use.

Children and Adolescents

Only limited safety and efficacy data are available for women under 18 years of age.

Hepatic Impairment

No studies have been conducted to evaluate the effect of hepatic (liver) disease on the disposition of 5X.

Renal Impairment

No studies have been conducted to evaluate the effect of renal (kidney) disease on the disposition of 5X.

5X is contraindicated in confirmed or suspected pregnancy.

Ulipristal Acetate is excreted in breast milk. Breastfeeding is therefore not recommended for one week following intake. Only extremely limited data are available regarding the health of fetuses or newborns exposed to Ulipristal Acetate.

Experience with overdose of 5X is limited. In one clinical study, a single dose equivalent to four times the standard dose was administered to a small number of subjects, and no adverse reactions were reported.
